5Bluetooth audio is fine - sort of...  Apr 17, 2010 By TC
Like the previous review (which I didn't read), the bluetooth audio will only play on the front speakers, and the second tech support guy I spoke to gave me the same answer as in the previous review. Oddly enough, at first the unit worked great, with full sound for almost two days, when it switched to front speaker operation only. The first tech support guy I spoke to was unaware of the "front-speaker limit", and provided me with a long list of things to try to correct the issue. After trying them, without success, I called back and I was connected to the second tech guy who told me it shouldn't have worked in the first place. So buyer beware, but I'm hoping to return it.

EDIT: The above is my original review. It DOES work will all speakers, for BT audio and hands-free. It's just that the settings for this are somewhat hidden. After spending some more time with Kenwood tech reps, I was told that there must be a defect, so I was referred to a local repair facility. This was an authorized retailer/repair - Suburban Audio in NJ near Philly - and the repair guy there knew exactly what setting was off and I had it fixed within minutes.

The proper setting can be found only while the radio is in BT hands-free mode (page 48 of the pdf manual). The setting to adjust is "Bluetooth HF/Audio", where you can select "Front" or "All". Even though the manual describes this for voice, is applies to both voice and audio streaming.

5Deck really is great!  Aug 01, 2010 By Addeh
I did some major shopping around for a new system, upgrading from a highly rated Sony deck. Still, I wanted something a bit newer with bluetooth so I could wirelessly use my ipod and phone. After researching quite a few decks (Taking several days to compare side by side results, this is what I went with) It looks real sharp one its out of the box, once it's inside the car (Install is fast if you know what your doing)It's all pretty simple to get your music going. The deck is speedy when it's searching for radio stations, plus bluetooth is major win. From what everyone is saying it's only in the front two speakers. WRONG. That's just the setting it starts out with. It takes less than 30 seconds to switch it to all speakers. The pdf guide is a real helper. My Ipod sync's quickly and can hold a strong signal for about 20 feet. The music syncs instantly and changes without any delay. The only downside is you have to sync the ipod to radio each time unlike my phone which auto does it. Not a issue though since it's well worth it. The microphone that comes with the deck is pretty sensitive, the speakers have to be turned down so that the person you're talking with can't hear themselves, but sound is clear both ways (no issues being heard). There are far more settings for music tuning then I could ever hope to tweak. Naturally if you have an ear for music you can have a lot of fun tweaking everything to your standards. Otherwise it'll sound great without all the special tweaks anyways if you don't want to deal with all that. Still, the settings that people change most are the first to come up (Like subwoofer levels). The plate detaches easily and reattaches just as easy and comes with a nice little carrying back(Although the material feels a bit rough and grainy, I wouldn't want the face rubbing up against it with pressure, but for casual carrying around or just having it in a stationary area, it's fine). It's a very smooth flip down when you want to put in a cd as well. Smudges can be a problem since the deck is pretty glossy. The view however is clean, no glare gets in the way (I might take into perspective my console area has an over hang ) The remote has some unnamed controlled which might become confusing. Pressing on the arrow keys does all sorts of different commands that aren't listed right away. Plus it doesn't seem to be very sensitive or effective unless it's pointed right at the deck (Not a problem with my other decks)

Anyways, audio is superior
Blue-tooth works great
Transmitter fast for changing stations, plus good clarity.
Very compatible with newer generations mp3 and cellphone devices (Using 3g touch 4.0 os and mytouch cellphone)
Menu speeds could be a little faster, but it's not slow either.
Remote could be a little more clear on button usage
Enough features and settings to make any audiophile happy
Clean clear and simple enough to make any novice happy

3Great looks, sounds great, that's about it  Sep 09, 2010 By Brian Jagielski
I bought this for the nice clean, simple design and A2DP Bluetooth audio streaming. I don't like a lot of buttons and flashing lights on my receiver. Of course Kenwood's sound awesome but unfortunately, they can't design a good user interface.

The screen is black and white and although there are 5 lines of text allowed on the display, the designers use hardly any of it and what they do use is wasted on huge, ugly icons. Some lines of text are upper/lower case, some are all CAPS. Annoying. It's also hard to read if your car allows a lot of light in.

Reaction time is very sluggish. If you change the volume, it takes 2 seconds to get back to the main screen. When you push the Favorites button, the screen goes blank then displays the word Favorites for 1-2 seconds before showing the presets. Extremely annoying when you're trying to change stations. I already know I'm in Favorites, I don't need the screen to tell me. Just take me there.

Because there are few buttons, they crammed 72,000 options into the menu items. You will not know the full capability of this receiver unless you read the user manual, which happens to be on a CD. So in order to learn about all the features, you have to sit in front of your computer instead of in your car with the receiver.

If you're using Bluetooth for your phone, the receiver does not reconnect to your phone if you've left the vehicle and come back. You have to go into your phones settings and reconnect manually.

This is not the kind of behavior or rushed design I expect from Kenwood for almost $300. I'm taking it back to the store when I get my Clarion FZ709 tomorrow.

2Good sound and power... aweful usability  Dec 04, 2010 By Edom
I can't stress enough, how AWEFUL the interface is.... So many nested menus, organized in the most disorganized manner possible. It really seems they took all the functions, and threw them in random folders... The USB support is terrible. If you want to listed your songs in random, you have to create a special music database (with the special Kenwood software), and if you do, you will NOT be able to browse the folder/files. If you don't create this database, then you can only listen to your songs by folders (very slow browsing). I've just gotten used to these annoyances, but if I know this ahead, I wouldn't have gotten it.

3No voice dialing, very slow phone book scrolling  Oct 11, 2010 By C. Cheung "Guardian cc"
I bought the Kenwood BT945U to replace the stock stereo in my 1999 Honda accord, so that I can make or answer calls conveniently and safely.

Positives:
1. Sounds very good as expected, but not too surprised as most of the media are digital.
2. A2DP works very well without connecting to the iphone cable. My son can pick his songs on my iphone and bluetooth to the stereo - very convenient for short trip or backseaters.
3. iphone/usb interface works good.

Negatives:
1. I was shopping for BT645U due to its voice dialing and phone book features, but changed my mind to BT945U in the last minute because of the external mic and a few more lines of display in the 945U. I thought BT945U is just a better featured version of BT645U - WRONG. BT645U has built in voice dialing through voice tag and you can voice tag 26 numbers. BT945U does not support voice dialing at all - very disappointed. I checked with Kenwood, there is no option to upgrade for voice dialing.

2. Scrolling through the phone book is extremely slow, sometimes it takes 15 seconds to scroll a few numbers. I have about 150 phone numbers.

3. There are only 6 presets for fast dialing - why limited it to 6 - memory/flash are so cheap and the 5 lines of display would be very convenient to display more entries.

4. There are only 6 favorites (presets) for AM/FM stations and everything else.

In retrospect, I should have bought a Sony MEX3800 at 2/3 of the price and supports voice dialing (though it doesn't support phone book).
